Jerry Falwell, Christian Soldier

Posted by  in January 13th 2012

Today, the Christian faith suffered the loss of a tireless servant and powerful evangelist. Even as I mourn for the loss felt by Dr. Falwell’s loved ones, I remember and celebrate the life he lived; for Jerry Falwell was not a man of empty rhetoric and few deeds. His life embodied the truth found in James 2:26: “Faith without works is dead.”

Jerry Falwell was first and foremost a man of action. While he could have contented himself with preaching and ministering to his flock, Dr. Falwell had a vision of a nation revitalized by the vibrant spirit of an active Christianity. His mission was to mobilize Christians that they might transform the social fabric of America.

It was Jerry Falwell’s conviction that this transformation could not occur without the active support and participation of young men and women, who would take the Christian message into the social and political arenas. Dr. Falwell’s legacy will not be immediately apparent, which is what he would have wanted. He established Liberty University in order to educate young men and women to be torchbearers in a dark world. This legacy will be apparent and profound in years to come, as dedicated graduates enter the workplace, driven by devotion to God and a desire to make an impact on their respective environments.

On a more personal note, Dr. Falwell’s influence has left an indelible mark upon my own life. When I ran for Congress in 2004, he publicly endorsed me as “a young Jesse Helms.” As a newcomer to the political scene, his public support was more than I could have hoped for. During the campaign, Jerry Falwell took me under his wing, introducing me to potential supporters and speaking on my behalf to fellow pastors. Far more valuable, however was the friendship Dr. Falwell offered me. His wisdom and insight lent some sanity in the midst of the turbulent campaign. I vividly recall sitting in his office, as he placed his hands on my shoulders and those of my wife, praying that God would let His will be done in our lives.

His mentoring, friendship and prayerful support are gifts I can never repay. I can however, pay tribute to his life, and his life’s work: educating and equipping Christians to spread the Christian message–not just at home and in the church, but in our communities and in our politics. When many Christians elected to duck the culture wars or took a pass on issues such as abortion, or the secularization of our children’s education, Dr. Falwell refused to budge. Even more important than his steadfastness, however, was his commitment to building a Christian Coalition which could give voice to our concerns and extend our values into the heart of the culture. Exhorting Christians to act on their beliefs, Dr. Falwell helped give new urgency and relevance to Christian values in America. This is Jerry Falwell’s legacy, and it will not soon be forgotten.

Understanding Guerrilla Warfare in the Modern Context

Posted by  in January 12th 2012

Guerrilla Warfare in simple terms means the effort of harassing an army by small armed bands. In other words, it is petty warfare. Generally we have 3 types of war i.e. total war, limited war and general war. The significance of Guerrilla warfare is that it is relevant to all these types of war.

Guerrilla Warfare is a form of warfare by which the strategically weaker side assumes the tactical offensive at places and times selected by it. History is witness to the fact that Guerrilla Warfare has never been resorted to by a militarily stronger side while mounting an offensive/attack. It is essentially the weapon of a strategically weaker side for tactical offensive at selected places and times.

This is borne out by any number of examples from history e.g. Russian partisans during German occupation/advance in World War II, China in the wake of Japanese occupation during World War II and more recently Afghanistan. A stronger side may resort to Guerrilla Warfare after it has been defeated e.g. Russian Guerrilla operations during the 2nd World War and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Having been ousted by the NATO forces the Taliban have regrouped as a guerrilla and terrorist force.

Guerrilla warfare is not a present day innovation. Historically, it was first fought in China in 360 BC (when emperor Huang employing guerrilla tactics succeeded in defeating the Miao race) and the concept has effectively survived through the centuries till the present day. “Guerrilla Warfare” means a little war and it has come to denote the irregular, non-professional civilian soldier who takes up arms to fight against professional military forces. The emphasis however, is not on taking over and retention of cities, townships or places. The primary, aim, as explained by Mao is to annihilate the fighting potentials, of the enemy. By continuously harassing the opponents with its ‘hit and run’ policy, a small troop of guerrillas successfully ties up a relatively larger body or soldiers. There are numerous examples where guerrilla warfare has achieved the purpose when conventional types of war have failed. History shows that Guerrilla Warfare has chiefly been the weapon of partisans, revolutionaries, rebels, communist inspired movements and more recently the vanguard of Islamic fundamentalism. During World War II in two years of combating partisans indulging in Guerrilla Warfare in Russia the German Army employed 300,000 soldiers.

Not only did the Army partisans tie up these troops but many a page in the German Wehrmacht archives is filled with descriptions which point to a feeling of hopelessness, growing in-intensity of nervousness and culminating into despair. Another example is that of Greece where 200,000 Nationalist troops were employed to combat only 30,000 Guerrillas. Another case is that of Fidel Castro of Cuba who with only 6,000 soldiers was able to overthrow the numerically very large Batista forces. It has been estimated that it takes approximately 10 regular soldiers to nullify one Guerrilla. By simple arithmetic, the number of troops needed to combat guerrillas could reach phenomenal figures. This is the basic military aim of a Guerrilla War i.e., to tie up and render immobile large bodies of regular soldiers and weaken their morale by waging a successful war of nerves. Though the military aim outlined above is basic, there are many Guerrilla operations conducted in which motives and purposes differ. For example, the motive of Soviet Guerrillas against the Germans during World War II was primarily to harass the German Rear and function as an intelligence agency. This objective varied from the motives of Ho-Chi-Minh of Indo China and Mao-Zedong in China, where their purposes were to overthrow the ruling government. Islamic fundamentalists are waging their war to establish their own brand of ‘pure’ Islamic religion.

There are certain characteristics identified with a Guerrilla Operations i.e., the exploitation of an unstable political situation, the gaining of popular support amongst the masses and the emphasis on the certain principles of war like concentration of force, advantageous use of the terrain and the effective use of the element of surprise. Of these, the political situation is of prime importance. No Guerrilla Warfare can be sustained without a political objective popular among the mass of people. Mao-ze-Dong states “If Guerrilla Warfare is without a political objective, it must fail. But, if it maintains a political objective which is incompatible with the political objective of the people there by failing to gain their support, then this too must fail”. As opposed to a professional soldier, a Guerrilla is basically a civilian from the local population Popular Support once obtained, the Guerrilla becomes a formidable force which may numerically outnumber the Opposing troops, though it may lack in fire power.

There is no scope in the above case for Guerrilla Warfare to develop into a conventional war. The Guerrilla activities ceases the moment the regular troops launch an offensive. There is no example of any Guerrilla operations during a successful advance of a regular army.

However, once the Guerrilla is fighting an established army, it is only the beginning of a conventional war. As there is no recorded instance of a pure Guerrilla operation in the strictest term of overthrowing a National Government the conversion at a later stage after the weakening of the opposing army to conventional war and physical control is a natural corollary to Guerrilla Warfare.

Thus, Guerrilla Warfare is a phase of Warfare that cannot by itself attain complete victory. China, North Vietnam all started off as Guerrilla operations. But, once the opposing regular army was exhausted, the conventional methods of war were adopted, to gain total victory. This is what happened in Vietnam. The early stages of the guerrilla operations of the Viet Cong had towards the end turned into a full scale conventional war. No amount of Aerial bombing could alter the result.

A number of Guerrilla fighters have made a name for themselves in history and some have achieved almost legendary fame. The last world war produced at least half a dozen such men, the First World War a Lawrence, the South Africa war a De Wet the American civil war Mosby and, of course one can always think of ‘Che’, Garibaldi and Shivaji. In contrast, not a single anti-partisan fighter had made a name for himself. This clearly sums up the fact as to the almost total invincibility of a Guerrilla Operation. But on the positive side it must be said that it is only now the real menace of Guerrilla Warfare is being understood.

The western democracies and India including Russia and China are confronted with a new development – the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Countering it will be the challenge of the 21st century.

Life After West Point Military School

Posted by  in January 8th 2012

West Point exists to educate and train Cadets who are commissioned as Officers in the US Army upon Graduation. The commitment is for a total of 8 years, 5 of which are on active duty and 3 in the Reserves if you choose not to continue on active duty. A very few graduates may select commissioning in other services, primarily where one of their parents has served a career in another service.

The primary options for Army service are the choice of branch of service. You choose that at the beginning of your senior year. What are your army career options? After graduating from West Point, you will be commissioned in one of several Army branches. You may want a combat arms branch such as Infantry, Field Artillery, Armor, Air Defense Artillery, Aviation or Combat Engineers. You also may choose a combat support branch such as Signal, Military Police, Chemical or Military Intelligence.

You may also want to choose one of the combat service support branches such as Ordnance, Quartermaster, Transportation, Adjutant General or Finance. Opportunities are also available for the Medical Service Corps or the Judge Advocate General Corps later in your service career. You will advance to positions of greater responsibility in each branch based on your abilities.

West Point is looking for well rounded young men and women who want to serve as commissioned officers in the US Army. By well rounded I mean good students, good athletes, and good leaders. The focus is on service in the Army rather than on the college education part.

Now to answer your specific questions. Commissioned officers serve as leaders of the wonderful young men and women in our Army today. The military is organized into branches of service that are either directly involved on the front lines (infantry, armor, field artillery, etc) or operate in support roles (signal, ordnance, intelligence, aviation, etc.) I would go to the Army’s web site and check it out thoroughly.

As for percentage rates for West Point, there are two interesting numbers. The first is the percentage rate of acceptance of offers of admission. In recent years (since 9/11) the percentage rate has been steady at about 85%. That is the highest acceptance rate of any college or university in the nation, topping Harvard, Princeton and all the rest. This says that those who apply to West Point know what they are doing and are very serious about it.

The second percentage rate of interest is the graduation rate. In recent years the graduation rate has held steady between 75% and 80% of those who enter graduate, in four years. The national average is 50% in SIX years.

If you chose not to stay beyond your five year active duty commitment the world is open to you. Experienced young Army officers are in great demand everywhere in our business world and they have no problems supporting themselves or their families.

Finally, to answer your question about the potential for playing a professional sport following graduation. The Department of Defense has recently adopted a policy where a small number of Service Academy Graduates (not just West Point) to be released early from their active duty obligation to play professional sports. They do have to pay back the cost of their education (several hundred thousand $$) and serve in the Army Reserves in a recruiting role, but today there is a viable option for elite level athletes.

If you work for what you want then some day you will get it and when you do you will look back on your days at West Point and thank them for giving you the change to become something better to do something better with you life.

The Power of Love – Soldier Saved by a Dream – A Valentine Story Mystery

Posted by  in January 5th 2012

This must truly be a Valentine story to beat all others. In the heat and chaos of World War One, a young Polish soldier known as Stanislaus Omensky kissed his fiancee, Merna, before marching off to war. “I’ll dream of you,” she said. Little did either of them know that Merna’s dream would end up saving Stanislaus’ life.

In October of 1918, in the dying days of the Great War, Merna had a terrible nightmare. She dreamed that Stanislaus was groping his way through a dark tunnel, ending in a jumbled mass of rocks and timbers. She saw him setting a candle down to throw his strength against the blockage, and collapsing back, weeping.

Merna had the same dream several times, and pestered the authorities in her native Czernak to try and help her find Stanislaus. With many thousands of soldiers missing or dead, they had no time for her. In the summer of 1919 her dreams changed. Now she saw a castle on the brow of a hill, with one tower crumbled into a mass of stone and timbers. As she got closer, she could hear a voice crying for help. Again, this dream returned to her night after night. She told whoever she could, and was greeted with skepticism and ridicule.

Merna took to traveling the countryside where Stanislaus’ regiment had last been seen. She was penniless, living only on the kindness of strangers, but refused to give up on her betrothed and her dream. The area was replete with many ruined castles, but none matched the tower in her nightmare.

Then, on April 25, 1920, she crested a hill near Zlota and leaped for joy. The castle overlooking the town was exactly the one of her dream. She ran into the town, dusty and screaming, and collapsed by the fountain, excited and exhausted. When she was roused she told the townspeople her story, and ran off to scrabble at the castle rocks bare-handed. Everyone in Zlota knew that the castle had been damaged in the war, but they didn’t know what to make of Merna’s tale. Still, many townsmen soon helped her, moving debris and rocks away from the base of the tower.

For two days they dug, and then came upon an open area under the rubble. From the entrance came the weak cries of a pale, ragged Stanislaus. He and Merna were reunited. The Polish soldier had been saved by the power of love, and the strength of Merna’s conviction in her dream.

Stanislaus’ side of the story was just as amazing. He had taken refuge in the castle during a fight, and been buried when artillery struck the tower. He had found candles, water, cheese, wine, and hundreds of rats, and lived in almost complete darkness for two years.

The Polish Army investigated, and found every aspect of the couple’s story to be true. Stanislaus was dismissed with honors, and the two married and lived, we can presume, happily ever after.

“The secret is not to dream,” she whispered. “The secret is to wake up. Waking up is harder.” – Terry Pratchett

The Modern US Military Uniforms

Posted by  in January 2nd 2012

The rich war history of the world as accounted in early manuscripts like the Bible and other ancient scripts of civilization has inspired what we regard now as modern warfare. Techniques, tactics, and technology in the modern wars are rooted from the basic concepts early men of war used. Since the day of the axes and swords, every military in the world has evolved and adapted to the most high end weapons of warfare the peak being the nuclear weapon. All this according to politics is a way to restore or maintain peace – by being military equipped.

Aside from the modernization of artilleries, militaries all over the world also advance their air, sea, and land defensive and offensive power by intensifying and developing their transportation. In this we see Russia, US, UK, China, Germany, and other war giants improving their fighter jets, imploring new technology to air combats. We see them develop their war ships and making them bigger and more lethal. We see them employ muscled trucks, SUVs, and tanks to commute ground soldiers where their presence is needed most. All these improvements are happening in just a very short span with every bit of technology being utilized.

Getting near the core of these improvements, the US military does not just after the modernization of their weapons, warplanes, warships, and tanks but as well as their tactics and gadgets. Today, US hold the most advanced weaponry and defense system in the world. They have one of the biggest forces in the world in terms of soldier count. In terms of gadgets, the US employs the most advanced communicating devices and other tools. Even the soldiers’ uniforms are engineered so to adapt easily to the environment the soldiers are exposed to.

The evolution of military uniforms began during the colonization era as a form of segregation. This is to easily know an ally or a field in the battlefield. In ancient Japan, China, and Europe, uniforms are basically used as armors against swords and sharp weapons. After WWI, great nations of great armies developed stealth in uniforms. By integrating patterns in the uniforms and workwear, they create a camouflaging effect.

The US military employs different kinds of uniforms. The classification can be informally named as the battle dress uniforms, corporate uniforms or working dress, and the gala. Each of the classifications also differs according to the branch of the military whereas the Army’s BDUs, corporate uniforms, and gala are different from those of the Marines, Air Force, etc. After the 2nd World War the US adopted different types of patterns for their battle dress uniforms and changed overtime.

Today there are 5 patterns that are actively used by the US military. One is the ACU or the Army Combat Uniform. This is a digital camo suit that is composed of tan, OD green and gray colors. This has been used in Iraq and will be replaced by the Multicam to be used in Afghanistan. The Marines use the digital woodland and desert MARPAT. The NWU or the Nave Working Uniform is composed of darker shades of the ACU. The Air Force employs the ABU or the Airman Battle Uniform composed of different tigerstripe patterns in gray shades.

These uniforms are said to have camouflage effect and are made with special fabric to withstand the harsh military environment. Many engineers in the military are still developing high-end battle dresses that are very efficient.

The Unpredictable Monarch – The Most Dominant Force Forever! Part-15

Posted by  in December 31st 2011

Aarthi was much focused on her work. Her fingers with pen had inseparable affairs with white paper. A lot of books, magazines and newspapers and other references gave the room, a perfect flea market look.

Karthik diverted her. “Sorry for the disturbance. Here’s your coffee madam”, animated Karthik gave her the coffee tumbler. “How’s your work? What is it about, honey?” anxious Karthik asked. “It’s about terrorism. The working tile is ‘Cannibals’, replied a serious Aarthi.

“Good” Karthik motivated her.

Karthik loved the way she drank coffee. Her eyes were waging a battle with his mind. Eyes are usually the index of mind. Her Calvary eyes literally ruled Karthik’s mind with a ‘Pentagon’ authority.
For her, the planets were at right place to stimulate success. Aarthi ruled Karthik. She only ruled him as of now. She ruled him by her love.

She whispered “Karthik, there might be a special news this month end.” Karthik presumed but asked her innocently

“What is it?”

“You are a dull – headed man. I mean to say my periods are getting delayed.” Aarthi blushed.

“Hey! Hey! What did you say?” excited Karthik shouted and hugged her.

“I am not sure dear, so let’s wait for doctor’s confirmation” Aarthi blushed.

“Are you missing your parents, da?”

“Yes, but I’ve you with me.”

“What about you? Are you feeling for your parents?”

“I feel everything will become alright.” Karthik lied.

Karthik did not want to tell her and wound her with his feelings. But he alone knew the pain he felt for the past 1 ? months. Initially, he had the feeling that his parents would excuse him. But as days progressed, fear slowly crept in and his imaginations for the possible worse things became stronger. The words “Your son is dead” kept lingering in his ears and mind.

Aarthi was focusing keenly on Karthik. Her instincts clearly revealed her that Karthik was not alright for he missed his parents.

She deported her lips to Karthik’s forehead. Karthik wiped tears from un-calibrated eyes of Kani. Sentiments shared in premium, love in instalments.

‘11 killed in US. Strike at Fallujah. 68 killed in car bomb in Baquaba, Iraq. Saddam Hussain taken to court, suppressing Shiite uprising and gassing of Kurds.

Sri Lankan government compensated more than 900 victims of violence committed against Tamils for 20 years.

Who’s the cruellest ruler of all? Hitler or Saddam. Are they really worse than ‘Uganda’s Idiamin? Uganda had nothing for super powers to swindle, while Germany had technology and Iraq and Kuwait, oil fields.

The Beslan school incident in Russia where hundreds of hostages killed and 350 injured in rescue operation of commandos.

John Kerry losing elections.

Arafat’s demise at a Paris hospital’ Pregnant Aarthi included all these in her book. She didn’t have any moment of respite. Five months passed. They celebrated Deepavali. Ramzan too. Vaishnavi and Shelvi conveyed their wishes.

25th November, 2004. Karthik looked a worried man. Aarthi came for his rescue. She hugged him from his backside.

“What happened, dear?”

Karthik was silent.

Karthik cleared her “I’am worried about Uma’s mail.”

“What did Akka, wrote?” curious Aarthi asked.

“Appa and Amma are coming tomorrow. I am planning to go to the Airport tomorrow. I don’t know how they will react.”

“Great news. We will go”

“No Kani, You stay here. We cannot guess how their mood will be”, feared Karthik. Kani did not bother to listen to her sweet heart’s words.

Next day. Anna International terminal, Chennai – Sadasivam and Meenakshi were shocked to find Karthik at airport, even more shocked to find their daughter-in-law. Karthik’s eyes cried without his permission. So did Meenakshi’s. Aarthi fell at Meenakshi’s and Sadasivam’s feet.

Meenakshi enquired “What’s your name, ma?”

“Aarthi”. This name was not certainly in her book but it sounded good for both Meenakshi and Sadasivam. Karthik held his parents feet. Meenakshi hugged her son and kissed him. Sadasivam was adamant.

Karthik lifted their luggage. Aarthi invited them to their home. Meenakshi wanted to join them. Sadasivam protested with his looks.

Meenakshi recommended “She is pregnant. Let’s not disappoint her.” Sadasivam was confused by the typical brahminical look of his daughter-in-law. Probably that might have created a soft corner for her in his mind. Aarthi pleaded “We have definitely committed mistake. Won’t you forgive us, appa?”

Sadasivam hardly spoke. But his body language indicated his recognition for his son and daughter -in-law. After all ‘Blood is thicker than water’. A month passed. Who would believe, so soon that Aarthi became daughter of Sadasivam and Meenakshi? It is the fate that fixed the plot and hence nature is the superior ruler.
